Made from 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from
a single vineyard. In August, the Pignotto vineyard undergoes a
dramatic green harvest. The remaining fruit grows ripe and concentrated
by the time the grapes are harvested in October. After the grapes
are pressed, the must was left in contact with the skins for 21
days during which time the cap was punched down multiple times daily.
After fermentation, the wine was aged in Allier barrique for 14
months. Pignotto exhibits incredibly intense purple colors and huge
extraction of fruit that is reflected in notes of dark cherry, cassis
and jam. Black fruit flavors explode on the palate rounded out by
hints of licorice and leather. This is a tremendous achievement
in Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

points - I have
never tasted a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo of this magnitude
"...a brilliant achievement...Its
inky/purple color is followed by
a sweet nose of melted licorice,
creosote, blackberries, cherries,
new saddle leather, pepper, and
incense...Dense, chewy, and muscular,
with supple tannin and a long, explosive
finish... "

Daily News - July 10, 2002 -
"This
may be the inkiest, most opaque
wine on the market today. A halogen
flashlight behind a glass of
this wine made only a faint purple
glow. The color is spooky, almost
cabalistic - you expect to hear
chants and incantations when
it's poured...Dominating is a
huge, dark cherry taste that
made me think of Chianti gumdrops...this
is not some over-drawn, hyper-ripe
fruit bomb. There are notes of
leather and licorice and a hint
of mushroom that add dimension
to this distinctly southern Italian
wine."

points - "Undeniably
the greatest Montepulciano d'Abruzzo I have ever tasted"
"...a superb value.
A revelation for the region...Full-bodied
and explosive, with awesome richness
as well as a knock-out nose of licorice,
flowers, blackberries, and cassis,
this pure, beautifully-textured
2000 is a tour de force in winemaking.
Don't miss it!"
